Lansdowne Bhoys came back from a goal down to defeat NY Greek Americans 2-1 on Sunday night at the Metropolitan Oval.
NY Greeks scored the opener in the first half’s first minute of added time as Tyler Botte headed the ball across the goal from a corner kick to Harry Hawkins, who re-headed the ball high in the middle of the net. Keeper Abdoukarim “Kabo” Danso stretched his hands upward but was unable to block Hawkins’ header.
Lukas Zarges tied it up for Lansdowne in the 77th minute with a 25-yard left footed free-kick that clipped the right post before going into the net past an outstretched Andrea-Roberto Pellegrini.
The Bhoys took the lead five minutes later when substitute Joseph Lopez one-touched Mamadou Guirassy’s cross past Pellegrini in the net.
NY Greeks remain in fifth place while Lansdowne extends their gap on top of the league to five points and stays unbeaten in 17 games.
Three key notes
1. Comeback Bhoys: Lansdowne Bhoys have been down four times this season in all competitions and went on to winning or tying the game every time.
2. Bhoys’ free-kicks have been priceless: Lansdowne scored from a set piece in each of their last three matches.
3. Two Bhoys limped off the field: Daryl Kavanagh picked up a nasty knock in the 65th minute and was substituted as well as Jean Voltaire later in the second half.
4. The Greeks are winless against the top four teams in league action: NYGA drew with second placed Cedar Stars Academy 3-3, lost to third placed NY Pancyprian Freedoms 3-0, tied with NY Shamrock SC 1-1 and lost to Lansdowne 2-1.
Players’ corner: Joseph Lopez (82nd minute game-winning goal)
Substitute Joseph Lopez scored the winner for the Yonkers based club in the 82nd minute.
“I was lucky enough to go in and make the difference and help the team get the win.”
He previously said: “We worked really hard, it’s hard beating Greek Americans at home cause they’re a strong team, they’re very organized but we pulled through.”
The former Brentwood High School star was eager to help the Bhoys level the scoring when his head coach Austin Friel was subbing him in the game in the second half.
“I knew we were losing and I knew I needed to get on and try to make a difference and try to focus on helping the team,” Lopez said, “and I’m really good at creating chances so I tried to stay focused, work hard and luckily everything came out the way we wanted.”
